They say it comes in threes, and if that’s the case then I’m owed a bit of a respite. The illness malingered. The house fell through, and then it seemed I couldn’t take my foot out of my mouth at work so much so that I feared for my job.
A day off and Jonah had a fever, and I, still weak from whatever ‘flu had felled me the week before, couldn’t sleep and so spent the day like a ghost wafting round the house in slow motion in my nightie.
Jonah can’t cope with illness. He gets angry, and you can tell a day or two in advance that he’s coming down with something from the frequency of his tantrums. But we couldn’t afford to spend the day hanging round the flat – they’ve done too much of that these holidays, Ava and Jonah, mainly at the expense of childminders – and we’d promised Kate that we’d take Lola for the day as she’d had ours on her todd to save us a day’s childcare – and three highly strung kids in a duplex isn’t much fun on my day off.
We’d planned to them out for a wholesome ‘edukashunal’ day out – a national heritage place with a playground – Tom has free entry on his black credit card – a relic from the days before the credit crunch when we, and the nation – had money to burn.
The weather didn’t play ball, and I was floaty from inadvertently upping my dose of SSRIs, but it was just as well, because the bickering in the car, as anticipated, was horrendous until I suggested a game of who can stay silent the longest – of course Jonah won as the most competitive out of the three, but by the time we arrived, he was car sick and melting down..a double dose of pain killers and the playground improved his mood, and he floated round the tour of Audley End as if he was actually interested in the history. Well, it killed a rainy afternoon, anyhow.
This was meant to go out last week, but I was ill, recuperating and just plain knackered. Soz. That’s also why it’s not all that great a post, but it’s 5.00 am so don’t shoot me.
